想像と経験の空間
When I first moved to New York, measurements in inches and feet were completely useless for understanding the size of rooms, furniture, or anything else. The system of measurement commonly used in the United States—inches, yards, pounds, gallons—had never been part of my daily life. To grasp a sense of these dimensions, I had to constantly convert them to the metric system. Only then could I vaguely imagine whether a space or an object was big or small, and what its shape was.
This experience sparked my interest in how we imagine, perceive, and experience space—for example, open spaces, voids, and enclosed or structured spaces.
When reading a non-illustrated description or a novel about a space, what do we actually imagine? How is visual information about a space perceived? This led me to the obvious realization that light is essential for understanding the scale and structure of a space.
However, photographs often provide very little information about the actual size of their subject matter. They can even make a subject’s size unclear or confusing by stretching or shrinking it.
Inspired by these feelings and questions, I began to explore the relationship between space and photography in this series of works. Space and photography interact as both an input and an output. This interaction can be seen as two-dimensional images or as three-dimensional objects. When combined and arranged, the photographs themselves create space—the 'void' and the imaginative space. As viewers move through the exhibition space, looking up at the walls and down at the floor, they experience both the tangible and intangible qualities of the photographs.
ニューヨークに住み始めた頃、私にとってインチとフィートの寸法は部屋や家具、その他何かのサイズを把握するのには全く役に立ちませんでした。アメリカ合衆国で通常使われている寸法と計量のシステム（インチ、ヤード、ポンド、ガロンなど）はそれまで私の日常生活には存在しなかったからです。それらの寸法を自分の感覚で把握するには、いちいちメートル法に換算し直さなければなりませんでした。そこで初めてそのスペースや家具が大きいのか小さいのか、どんな形なのかが漠然と想像できるのです。
このことが、私たちはどのように空間／スペース（例えばオープンスペース、間、壁で囲まれた空間や構造空間など）を想像、認識そして経験しているのかということに関心を持つ始まりとなりました。
スペースについて図解のない記述や小説を読んだとき、果たして何を想像するのだろうか？空間についての視覚情報はどのように認識されるのだろうか？
ここで、「光」が空間の広さや構造を把握するにあたって不可欠だという当たり前のことに気づきます。
しかしながら、写真は被写体（空間）の実際の大きさの情報にはあまりならず、被写体を引き伸ばしたり縮ませて、むしろ不明瞭または混乱させたりするのです。
以上の感覚や疑問から空間と写真の関わり合いに興味を持ち、この作品シリーズで探っています。空間／スペースと写真は、インプットとアウトプットとして相互作用しています。その相互関係は二次元のイメージとして、または三次元にある物体として見ることができます。組み合わせたり、並べられた写真たちはそれら自体で空間 – 間と想像空間 - を創り出します。作品を見る人々は写真が展示された空間を歩き回り、壁を見上げたり、床を見下ろしたりしながら、写真の持つ有形と無形のものを経験します。
